Newburyport is my hometown and it is always great to come back home to run. This was my 8th consecutive Yankee Homecoming 10 mile race and this was my first race I ever ran back when I was in my 20s and again when I got back into running in 2002. I am a graduate of Newburyport High School class of 1976 and the start and finish of the race at the high school brings back many fun memories.
Well, this was another classic Goon party that started with me driving to Newburyport the morning of the race to pick up the Squad’s numbers and shirts. Everything was going great except I could not find Goatie’s number. Had to call the Goat and she informed me that she registered as a Mountain Goat. OK! Look under "M" not "P" for Prescott. There it is ! MG Prescott. This is why I have gray hair!!!! I Raced back to work and during the day I bent over to pick up a file that I dropped and when I bent over my pants ripped up the back of my butt!!! Wow, I must have a fat butt! Thank God for suit coats!
The Squad meeting time was 5 PM and everyone was on time which was amazing. Even the Judge was on time which made history. The Judge is never on time. HCM (Goon Hit Man & Protector) showed up on the bike and escorted the Goon Limo to Newburyport.
Once we jumped on 495 the Goat asked if I had loaded the numbers and shirts. Oh crap they were still in my office!!!! I had to pull off the highway and head back to my office to grab the numbers. Once accomplished, we once again headed down 495. Having a lead foot and knowing the back roads of Newburyport still gave us plenty of time to make it to the race.
Through the generosity of one my fellow funeral directors we were able to use his facility for changing and bathrooms. Once everyone had the Big "G" displayed we jogged to the start.
It was a huge day for the Goon Squad because Spanky finally put on the Big "G" and the Secret Goon came out of hiding! Poopsy (AKA The SecretGoon) had the Big "G" displayed and was ready to rock and roll!
When the horn blew the Goons took off. I was kind of spent from a month of working 12 - 16 hour days plus a long run of 20 miles on Sunday so I knew I had to keep things at tempo. Goatie, Poopsy, Cougar, OCG, Spanky and Brewski were gone!!!! I mean gone! I could not see any of them at the half mile mark.
I stayed steady at a 7:30 pace and had lots of fun yelling to many of my old friends from Newburyport. I stopped for a few seconds and visited with my parents and brother who were on the course yelling for the Goons.
It was a hot and humid day and as I got into miles 7 and 8 I started passing many runners. As I entered the High School and was sprinting to the finish I was shocked to see our newest member "The Pusher" (John Murphy) on the sidelines cheering the Goons on! The Pusher is awesome!
Once over the line I met Goatie, Cougar and Poopsy who had already finished. Great running by all and I was also surprised to see OCG finishing right behind me! Way to go OCG!!!!!!
As always the Goons hung out with many other runners from other clubs having lots of laughs. We even caught up to the new MVS Volunteer of the Year "The Codfather".
Before blasting back to head quarters we were treated to Brewski’s homemade brew! Wow, this guy can make beer! Shared lots of stories and lots of laughs. It does not get any better than this. The Goons are nothing but fun!
Rumor has it that the Goon Limo will be rolling to Sandown, N.H. on Saturday August 8, 2009 for the Sandown 5 mile 13 hill road race. Sounds like fun to me! Stay tuned!
